Throwback Thursday #5 | Every Object Tells a Story: Two Art Projects at the Goa Chitra Museum | Presentations by Lina Vincent and Aparajita Bhasin | July 23, 2020 | 06:00 PM

 
As the lockdown and call for physical distancing continue, we, at IFA, are discovering new ways of engaging with technology and online platforms to share the work of our grantees. We are delighted to introduce a virtual series of conversations, film screenings, and performances titled Throwback Thursdays with IFA, where everyone is welcome.

As part of the series, on Thursday, July 23, 2020, we bring to you presentations by Lina Vincent and Aparajita Bhasin. Lina is a cultural practitioner committed to socially engaged arts practice. This is reflected in the multidisciplinary projects she has developed and participated in over the years. Aparajita Bhasin, trained as an art historian, manages digital heritage projects at a design and innovation consultancy in Goa. The presentations will be moderated by Suman Gopinath, Senior Programme Officer, Archives and Museums Programme, IFA.

Lina and Aparajita received fellowships from IFA to work with the Goa Chitra Museum, Goa, under the Archival & Museum Fellowship programme that was made possible with support from Tata Trusts.

Goa Chitra, founded by Victor Hugo Gomes, opened its doors in 2009. This is an ethnographic museum that has more than 40,000 artefacts connected with Goa’s agrarian roots. The cluster of Goa Chitra, Goa Chakra and Goa Cruti museums together narrate the history of Goa through objects, texts and oral histories that have been collected from the older members of the community.

For over a year, Lina and Aparajita engaged with the Goa Chitra museum and worked with objects that they selected from the collection. Lina used 15 iconic objects and made visible their many-layered stories through a variety of formats. The stories unravelled the human histories around them, as well as their aesthetic, historic and contemporary significance. While Lina’s project concentrated on the materiality of hand-crafted objects, Aparajita digitally documented selected objects to create 3D models using cutting edge immersive mediums  like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Her interventions focused on emerging new media tools that could potentially enhance the interaction between the visitor/viewer and create possibilities for knowledge and heritage to be preserved and documented for posterity. Both Lina and Aparajita curated a series of events during their fellowship period to bring together a varied audience to engage with the museum collection.
