A Lecture Performance by Suvani Suri and Amarnath Praful

How is an anatomical operation performed on a song? And not just any song, but one that is identifiable and in the collective memory that runs across generations, geographies, languages, historical events, experiences, and genealogies? 

This question forms the impulse behind Anatomy of a Song, a collaborative project between Suvani and Amarnath under the Explorations category of our Arts Practice programme, that explored the different renditions of the song We Shall Overcome. Through a process of mining, archiving and juxtaposing the multiple variations of the song from YouTube and its field of comments, the song’s contour starts to emerge–one that shifts from the private to the public, the personal to the universal and takes up a multitude of voices and performs specific gestures at different moments. The project opens up various possibilities of expression such as automatic supercut sonic exploration, AI engine video exploration, and a graphic design hybrid text PDF.

Join us to experience a lecture-performance as experimental as the artwork it talks about, that performs a ‘cutting up’ or a turning inside-out of the song.

Suvani Suri is a Delhi-based sound artist and educator, who was one of the participating artists in the fourth edition of Kochi Muziris Biennale. 

Amarnath Praful is a visual artist, writer and educator who primarily works with photography and teaches at the National Institute of Design. 

This session is organised as part of Project Showcase@IFA, a series of online presentations to showcase, discuss and engage audiences with the diverse projects we support and implement across programmes.
