Building on Tradition - The Role of the Archive in Musical Practice
A Presentation by Shubha Mudgal
Wednesday, June 28, 2023 | 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM IST | Zoom and Facebook Live
In a field like Hindustani classical music that is steeped in oral traditions, what does an archive look like? Who creates it, and who can access it? Can the artist be an archivist too?
Join us for a conversation with Shubha Mudgal, as she speaks about the possibilities and challenges of archiving Hindustani music. A central question to Shubha’s presentation would be “How does one learn from the archive?” Focusing on Hindustani classical music and referencing some of her own works, Shubha will touch upon disciplines such as literature, anthropology and performance studies, to bring out the interdisciplinary possibilities of archiving, both as a creative practice and a pedagogical tool. The material she refers to in the talk will be in Hindi, Brajbhasha, Awadhi.
Shubha Mudgal is a Hindustani classical vocalist trained by some of the finest scholar musicians and gurus of the country. Awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2000, she has received several accolades and awards. Shubha is also well known for her work related to music education and popular music.
