Moushumi Bhowmik in Performance | May 11, 12, 13, 2012 | Delhi
India Foundation for the Arts is proud to inform you that one of its grantees, Moushumi Bhowmik will be performing three concerts in New Delhi, between May 11 and 13, 2012, along with her friends Satyaki Banerjee and Rosalind Acton. Moushumi received IFA grants to research, document and disseminate the folk music of Eastern India and Bangladesh, which involves the element of biraha (longing in separation). The repertoire for these concerts will include Moushumi’s own compositions in Bangla, other forms of Bengali art and folk music, cello solos by Rosalind including compositions by Bach and Britten, and Satyaki’s repertoire of the mystical poetry of Bengal, including songs of Kabir. About the Artists Moushumi is a singer, writer and researcher of Bengali music who has recorded with labels such as HMV and Times Music, and worked with musicians, filmmakers, theatre directors and authors in India, Bangladesh and the UK. She performs and lectures at home and abroad. Her research, supported by IFA among others, can be accessed on www.thetravellingarchive.org. Satyaki studied the sarod with the late Pandit Dipak Chowdhury and now trains under Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. He picked up the dotara in the company of practising folk musicians, in akhras and melas, and in him the classical and folk meld to evolve into a unique style of playing. He sings mostly Bengali mystical poetry, in the baul and kirtan traditions of Bengal. Rosalind studied the cello at the Hochschule fur Kunste, Bremen, Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. As a chamber musician and soloist, Ros has performed in France, Germany, Finland and the USA, and is currently working regularly with Northern Sinfonia (a chamber orchestra based in Newcastle), and with Opera Della Luna (touring opera around the UK and Europe). |
