We are delighted to invite you to a theatrical performance of Maya Bazaar by the children of Surabhi Theatre, Hyderabad. The hour-long performance will feature an act set in Ghatotkacha's cave. It will be followed by a lecture-demonstration by Dr Gautam Dayal linking the worlds of art and science.
Jayachandra Varma Rekandar, Director of Surabhi Theatre in Hyderabad and Hansa Thapliyal, filmmaker, writer, and teacher, received an Archival and Museum Fellowship from IFA to bring together the worlds of Art and Science. Together, they will facilitate a three-day workshop at the VITM which will give school children between class 5 and 10, the opportunity to discover the many techniques of stagecraft that are rooted in science. Led by the children of Surabhi Theatre, the workshop will include backstage preparations and a live theatre performance, alongside lecture-demonstrations by experts in science and art.
Surabhi Theatre will also be presenting the Karnataka Premiere in Bangalore of Maya Bazaar, (90 minutes) a play based on characters from the Mahabharata. This spectacle of illusions and wonder, which will be performed by the children of the troupe, is directed by Jayachandra Varma.

The shows will now take place at the Ravindra Kalakshetra, JC Road (next to Town Hall) on Monday, June 25, 2018 at 06:30 PM (Free Entry) and at National School of Drama, Kalagrama, Mallathalli (near Bangalore University) on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 06:30 PM (Tickets priced at Rs 100/- each, will be available at the venue).
About:
Surabhi Theatre has developed from a family theatre group that has been active in Andhra Pradesh-Telangana for close to a century and a half. The performers work in diverse capacities—both as technicians and actors, and travel together.
Jayachandra Varma Rekandar is lead actor, singer, and director of Surabhi Theatre. He was awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar in 2017. He has had diverse roles in the Theatre, since he was a child.
Hansa Thapliyal is a filmmaker, writer, and teacher. She integrates stop-motion animation with her fiction/non-fiction work. Her work has been showcased in India and abroad.
Gautam Dayal has a doctorate in mathematics and is an educator in the field of science and technology. He explores the role that 'making', 'play' and 'tinkering' has in building understanding.
