- Sur Yaman Kalyan, Shah Jo Risalo

Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, a renowned Sindhi poet, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the literary and cultural landscape of the Indian subcontinent. His work, Shah Jo Risalo, demonstrates folk tales as metaphoric representation of Sufi messages. The poetry is celebrated for its lyrical quality and its invocation of a transcendental being immanent in the world.

Mohbat Je Medhan Me’, meaning ‘in the arena of love’, is a musical performance based on Bhittais’ songs about expressing love, praising the beauty of the beloved, and seeking a battle to meet them. We invite you to understand the love, and the journey of the lover, as depicted in the words of the Sufi poet. The artists are Arab Jat, Abdul Jat, Sikandar Langha, Ayaj Langha, with narration by Asif Rayama.

We also invite you to be a part of our special circle of Individual Donors, Patrons and Friends of IFA at this memorable evening curated by Asif and his group. We encourage you to consider making a contribution to IFA and invite guests with an interest in supporting the arts and connecting with us, so that we continue to create platforms where artists may flourish, reflect and create.

Asif Rayama has been researching and documenting the traditional sufi music of Kutch for over a decade. He aims to build community access for materials to learn the traditional folk arts, and hopes to develop a Shah Latif information centre locally.

Abdul Jat runs a tea stall in Bhuj and hails from the pastoral Jat community of the Kutch district. He is also a poet.

Arab Jat, from the pastoral Jat community of Kutch, is a leading performer in Sindhi sufi singing. He follows the late Mithu Kutchhi, the legend of the art.

Ayaj Langha is part of the Langha musician community and plays the harmonium in the Dastaan group.

Sikandar Langha is a young artist of Sindhi theka on dholak, an important instrument used for Kaafi and Dastaan performances.

This project was made possible with support from BNP Paribas India.

The performance will be followed by wine and hors d'oeuvres. We look forward to seeing you at this special showcase of a musical tradition and growing the circle of Friends of IFA
